Common cervical pain symptoms are:

  • pain with movement
  • reduced range of motion
  • stiff neck
  • sharp shooting pain
  • achy or dull pain
  • radiating neck pain into shoulders or arms
  • Headaches can come on with or without neck pain

In this article, we'll explore some of the most common causes of neck pain, as well as some treatment options and at-home remedies that can help you find relief.

Types of neck pain / cervical pain symptoms and signs

There are many different types of neck pain, and the causes can vary greatly. The most common type of neck pain is cervical pain due to myofascial or trigger point referral pain, which is a pain in the neck that can radiate into the shoulders and arms or head. This type of neck pain is often caused by muscle strain or tension and can be treated with over-the-counter medication, massage, and rest.

Another common type of neck pain is called torticollis, which is when the neck muscles contract involuntarily, causing the head to tilt to one side or limiting the neck's range of motion. Torticollis can be caused by a variety of things, including muscle strain, nerve irritation, or even an emotional condition such as anxiety or stress. Treatment for torticollis usually includes chiropractic or physical therapy and medications to relax the muscles.

Finally, another type of neck pain is cervicogenic headache, which is a headache that originates from the neck. Cervicogenic headaches are often caused by muscle tension or imbalances in the bones and joints of the neck. Treatment for this type of headache typically includes chiropractic care in Sydney, massage therapy, stretching exercises, or medication.

Common causes of neck pain

There are many common causes of neck pain, and often the pain is due to muscle strain or tension. Other times, neck pain can be caused by a herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, arthritis, or other conditions. If you have neck pain, it is important to see your doctor to rule out any serious underlying causes. A neck x-ray may be indicated if the cause of injury is not established. Once a diagnosis is made, there are many treatments that can help relieve the pain.

These include over-the-counter and prescription medications, chiropractic treatment, acupuncture, and massage. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to treat the underlying condition. You can also try some at-home remedies to help relieve the pain and stiffness. These include applying heat or ice, taking over-the-counter pain relievers, practising good posture, and doing gentle exercises and stretches.

Neck pain treatments are available

There are many different types of treatments available for neck pain, and the best option for you will depend on the underlying cause of your pain. Some common neck pain treatments include:

Chiropractic Treatment

This can help to improve alignment and relieve pressure on the joints and nerves.

Massage

This can help to relax the muscles and ease the pain.

Exercise

Stretching and strengthening exercises can help to improve the range of motion and relieve pain.

Acupuncture or Dry Needling

Can be effective for relieving pain.

Heat or Cold Therapy

Applying heat or cold to the painful area can help to reduce inflammation and pain.

Worst case scenario, if there is an underlying condition that has not been resolved with conservative care then surgery may be required if recommended by your specialist.

If you're suffering from neck pain, talk to your doctor about which treatment options are best for you.

Neck pain relief at home

There are a number of things you can do to find neck pain relief at home. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen, can be effective in reducing inflammation and pain (Check with your doctor first if these medications are suitable for you). Heat or ice applied to the affected area can also help to reduce neck pain and inflammation.

Other home remedies for neck pain relief include:

  • Taking a hot shower or bath to help relax tense muscles
  • Try adjusting our pillow height. If you sleep on your back, a low pillow may be better to support your neck but if you sleep on your side, then a pillow that is a little higher is better to fill in the space between your neck and your shoulders. (Avoid sleeping on your stomach, as this can worsen the pain.)
  • If your neck pain is caused by muscle tension, massage may be helpful. You can also try gentle stretching exercises to help relieve muscle tension. If your neck pain is severe or persists for more than a few days, you should see your Chiropractor or physiotherapist for a diagnosis and treatment plan.
