You’ve just had back surgery and your doctor has given you the go-ahead to start seeing a chiropractor. But is it safe? Can chiropractic care help you heal? This article will give you the answers you need.

Chiropractic Adjustments for Back Pain

Chiropractic care is often recommended as a conservative treatment for back pain, especially after surgery. Although there is no definitive evidence to support the use of chiropractic care for post-surgical back pain, some studies have shown that it may be effective. In addition, many people find that chiropractic adjustments can help to relieve back pain and improve their quality of life.

If you are considering chiropractic care after back surgery, it is important to discuss this with your surgeon or primary care physician first. They will be able to provide you with guidance on whether or not it is safe for you to receive chiropractic adjustments.

Back Pain After Surgery

After back surgery, it is common to experience some degree of pain and discomfort. However, many people are surprised to learn that chiropractic care can be an effective way to manage this pain.

Chiropractors are trained to work with patients who have had back surgery, and they understand the delicate balance that is required in order to safely and effectively treat these patients.

There are a few things that you should keep in mind if you are considering chiropractic care after back surgery. First, it is important to consult with your surgeon and get their approval before beginning any type of treatment. Second, make sure to find a chiropractor who has experience working with post-operative patients.

Chiropractic care can be a safe and effective way to manage pain after back surgery. However, it is important to consult with your surgeon and find a qualified practitioner in order to ensure the best possible outcome.

Recovery Time After Back Surgery

After back surgery, it is important to follow your doctor's orders for a successful recovery. For tissues to fully heal varies between 6 weeks - 9 months depending on the surgery.  Depending on the type of surgery, you may be able to go home the same day or you may need to stay in the hospital for a few days. Once you are home, you will need to take it easy and avoid any strenuous activity. Your doctor will likely give you specific instructions on when you can return to your normal activities.

Chiropractic care may be recommended as part of your post-surgery recovery plan. Chiropractors are trained to provide gentle, specific adjustments that can help relieve pain and promote healing. Many people find that chiropractic care enhances their recovery and helps them return to their normal activities more quickly.

If you are considering chiropractic care after back surgery, be sure to discuss it with your surgeon beforehand. Once you have the green light from your surgeon, look for a qualified chiropractor who has experience treating patients who have had back surgery.

Is It Safe to Be Adjusted After Surgery?

This is a common question that we get asked by our patients. The answer, however, is not as simple as a yes or no. It depends on what type of surgery you had, how long it has been since your surgery, and what your current pain levels are.

If you had a laminectomy or discectomy, then it is generally safe to be adjusted relatively "soon" ( 6 weeks -3 months ) after surgery. These procedures do not involve any fusion of the spine, so there is no risk of destabilising the spine by having an adjustment.

If you had a spinal fusion, then it is typically recommended to wait at least 4-9 months before having an adjustment. This is because it takes time for the fusion to fully heal and for the surrounding muscles and ligaments to adjust to the new position of the spine. Adjustments during this time period could potentially disrupt the healing process and lead to more pain.

Chiropractors are known to adjust spines and joints, however, there are different types of treatments that chiropractors can provide that does not involve adjusting joints. Treatment should always be tailored to the patient's needs, tolerance, and body. So just because you can not be adjusted does not mean you can't receive chiropractic care.

Of course, every patient is different and you should always consult with your surgeon or primary care doctor before getting adjusted after back surgery. They will be able to give you specific advice based on your individual case.
